Benedict's brand of link Building

What is the reality of backlink building

It's interesting that whilst Google and indeed most digital engineers are scrupulously honest, and believe in a sense of fair play, they can also be quite devious. Google has long been aware that having an algorithm that depends on hyperlinks between websites as a method of gauging site popularity can be easily manipulated.

Selling links is against Google policy, but....

Selling links is against Google policy. Buying links, in order to manipulate Google's index is also wrong. Google can quite simply find out who is selling links, in the past we have seen a number of websites owned by independent operators lose their page rank and were sometimes removed from Google's index for blatantly selling links.

But how does Google find out who has been buying links. Without access to bank accounts, which website owners are buying links, or paying external companies to either include a link on their website, or to build links on their behalf.

Google's latest Penguin update has solved this problem.

What Google has done is look at the anchor text used within a hyperlink. Poor link building, can often be identified by the repetitive use of a single keyword or phrase that the client wants to appear high in the Google search results page (SERP). What

Google has done is identified websites that have disproportionately, or an 'unnaturally' large number of backlink using identical or same match anchor text.

Google has forced Webmasters to admit wrong doing

By removing, or simply penalising these guilty websites, Google has forced Webmasters to admit that in the past they have paid for these links to be placed on the Internet. They have admitted to buying links.

Google's latest Penguin update has solved this problem. So there is a lot of talk about link building. However what is being said is incorrect. There is no such thing as a bad link.

There is such a thing as a bad linking strategy which would include using similar or say even anchor text throughout all of the backlink to a single website. However if you ask your SEO company to do a backlink profile check on your website and to identify which are spammy links or bad links they will no doubt give you an answer.

So there is a lot of talk about link building. However what is being said is incorrect, and we can prove it

One of the advantages Benedict has over competitors is our own portfolio of 4000 websites. With this we have an infinite number of potential backlinks. We can build links to our own websites client websites and individual websites not controlled by Benedict, and see what happens on a grand scale.

The research we undertook showed that there were certain flaws in current SEO thinking on link building.

IP addresses and backlink profile

Anyone who has built a web spider or bot knows when you crawl the Internet scraping information, data retention / storage / database indexing can easily become an issue.

The more complicated the bot, the longer the process. Whilst processes might be measured in milliseconds, when you are crawling the entire Internet, additional processes, and additional information storage becomes an issue.

Current SEO thinking is that backlinks from the same IP address or range of IP addresses is deemed to be a bad link. What is interesting, is that this entire website as backlink built to it from the same IP address, yet you have found it.

There is no such thing as Good or bad links

Another illusion, or SEO myth that we disapproved, was the concept of a good link being on theme, or in some way on a related subject to the backlink, in order for Google to score the link as having a positive factor in SEO.

Whilst there is some truth in "on theme", it is actually reserved by 'page theme' as opposed to website theme.

Coming back to collecting information with a bottomless spider and applying rules to certain variables, the algorithm is sufficiently complicated, and the amount of data needed to be copied and processed is already huge, to decide an entire website theme, and the page theme, and then the backlink and to work out that the backlink takes all of these boxes, including that the website in context is also of a similar theme is nearly impossible.

What Benedict has become expert at, is researching a domain, and then an entire website to define which pages have link strength as defined by Google, and Google alone. What we have found is that the websites that offer the most link juice, or link strength, do not comply with commonly used SEO metrics, like SEOMoz etc.

Whilst we have spoken to the founder of SEOMoz (more through cumulative research ideas) we do not rate their link data. Still it is better than nothing.

Links must be 'on theme' or more misinformation

What we have begun to see, is that there is a confusion or perhaps a PR stunt being undertaken by Google, where if a link not on the theme, it is unlikely to be clicked on by a user, hence the link is not deemed to have any SEO value.

However backlinks and SEO, is about computer-generated code being read by computer-generated algorithm, there is not a human in sight.

Whilst it is true that the theme of a paragraph or a web page can be taken into consideration regarding the 'link juice' or 'strength' of a backlink it is nearly impossible to define and index the theme of an entire website. What for example is bbc.co.uk about? There are travel pages, radio, weather TV pages, endless charity pages, gardening , food; I think you get the gist.

Benedict has spiders or web bots that scrape data and then organise that data into a searchable form. The amount of data and process power that Google would require to take this sort of information into its data-centres would be far beyond what the search giant is capable of.

SEO reviews from Benedict

"From the very start we knew that Benedict was the right SEO company for us. Not only did they avoid all jargon, they quietly got on with the work and we watched our two websites appear from nowhere to page 1 on Google. As a business, we have been going for over a 100 years and now Benedict has taken our company to new levels. Their ideas and their execution are faultless and they always work more hours than they are contracted to. They take great pride in their work and are a joy to work with.""
